Dental Archimedes Drill, probably English, early 19th century. The drive shaft is made of steel, the swiveling gear head is made of brass (therefore a high proportion of copper) or of tin-plated brass, the two handles are made of ebony. Only one drill in high quality steel has been preserved. This model of dental Archimedes drill holders is an early model (for a very close model with ivory handels see Bennion, Antique dental instruments, page 67, photo 70). a beautiful and rare dentistry instrument in perfect working order. This dental drill is large : 24 cm lenght without drill bit, 30 cm with. The usual models are smaller and measure about 15 cm.
