Fergusson trocar set

A second quater 19th century set of two straight ebony handled trocars with silver sheathed cannulae in their embossed Moroccan leather case. The box is signed by: Fergusson Surgeon’s instrument maker,21 Giltspur Street, Smithfield, London. St. Bartholomew’s hospital. Circa 1828-1858

These could have been used for a variety of procedures requiring the aspiration of fluid from a cavity or cyst, from abdominal paracentesis (drainage of ascitic fluid from the abdominal cavity) to antral sinus washout (for the clearing of accumulated secretions from the sinuses in chronic sinusitis).
The length of the two trocars are 13 and 15,5 cm. Case dimension is 17 x 5,5 x 3 cm
