Frederic Charrière amputation and urology case, c. 1840-1850

Amputation and urology case signed ‘Charrière à Paris’ of circa 1840-1850. Made of steel Steel, ebony, brass, fabric, wood and velvet. The case is foreseen with its original label on the inner side with the address ‘9 rue de l’école de médecine Paris’, and engraved on the top plate by the original owner ‘De Lafaye. Amputation’. On the right-hand side, a paper label reads ‘Trousse d’autops[ie]’. This box can be dated from the 1840s to the late 1850s, when Frédéric Charrière worked alone or in partnership with his son Jules. We have not found any interesting information on a surgeon by the name of ‘De Lafaye’.
The set includes on the upper tray: a small unsigned saw, seven amputation knives of which one bears the mark of Vitry frères, two gouges or flat chisels. The lower tray includes a Charrière’s large continuous-pressure tourniquet, a handle, a lead mallet, a large incisive pincers, a charriere modification of a Frère Côme simple lithotome signed by Mathieu and a Dupuytren double lithotome modified by Charrière. In the lid are a large saw with two adjusting knobs, two curved needles, two large scalpels, a fond-puller or ball-puller, large forceps for grasping and sawing bones, and a pair of scissors (which is the only replacement).
