Brunton silver plated Otoscope van Maw.
A complete silver plated otoscope or auroscope by Maw Son and Thompson set in its original box dating the late 19th century. These were used to examine the external auditory meatus and the tympanic membrane.
The mechanisms of illumination is ingenious. Early attempts to view dark receses were confounded by the light source obstructing the line of vision. Using a mirror to reflect light from an external source by 90 degrees, the central hole allows the examiner to look along the axis of the light. In good condition with intact silver plating throughout, the hinge of the box is restored by tape. measurements box 11,5 x 10 x 6,5 cm..
