Lesueur Jeune Paris obstetrical case, c. 1820.

An obstetrical case with four instruments signed by ‘Lesueur Jeune à Paris’ of the 1820’s. Made of steel, ebony, pewter, wood, leather, velvet and brass; Louis Lesueur was active in Paris in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His son seems to have succeeded him around 1812-1815 and set up his own business around that time.
The case includes a Baudelocque speculum, a Baudelocque pelvimeter, an obstetrical lever, a Coutouly pelvimeter and a pewter clyster. Two hooks are missing, as is a second cannula for the clyster. Obstetric surgery cases from this period are extremely rare, especially those signed.
