A basilyst with ebony handle c 1850


The basilyst, the last of these deliberately destructive instruments, was mostly used on the continent and was for dismembering the body of the child either before or after craniotomy. A long steel guard concealed a two sharp blades that swung out on pressure from a thumb piece attached to the handle. Length 28 cm
