Cucumis Sativus female model by Brendel, 1890

A anatomical flower model by Brendel of the female Cucumis sativus n° 153, c  1890-1900. This model was described in the Brendel catalogue as: Cucumis sativus, common cucumber, female flower, magnified 5 times. On both models, (there is also male flower model by Brendel under n° 152) the lower part of the funnel-shaped corolla has been designed to be taken apart in order to clearly illustrate the internal structures; in addition, a cross-section shows the interior of the ovary. The model consists of 4 parts and a turned wooden base with Brendel blue label.

In 1866 Robert Brendel (ca. 1821-1898) from Breslau took over the production the flower models. He was succeeded by his son Reinhold Brendel (ca. 1861-1927). In 1866, there were thirty models to choose from, and by 1913, there were nearly 300. The models were developed in consultation with professors including Julius Cohn, Eduard Eidam, Alexander Tschirch, Leopold Kny, Carl Müller, Emerich Ratháy, Lajos Jurányi, and G. Höstermann. They are made of various materials, such as papier-mâché, wood, metal wire, and glass beads.
