French Cosmographe C 1875

A rare French “Cosmographe” C 1875, signed Cosmographe te. ‘S..D.G., France & Etranger’ on the calendrical plate and Perigot, Paris, on the 12inch  ( 30,5 cm) diameter globe. Standing 23 inch ( 58,5 cm) tall overall on a turned ebonized wood base, the cosmographe has geared motion against a calendar scale, to show how the earth axis remains fixed in space throughout the year. A folding terminator ring is used to demonstrate the variation of solar illumination with season. In addition Roman numbers (I – XII, two times) on enamelled plaques are situated on the time zones, very rare. The Cartouche gives the follow instruction: Globe Terrestre / Un metre de circonferenee 40.000.000 / Dresse par CH.
